    Code Search is Easy Earlier this week, Tom MacWright posted Code Search is Hard . He describes the research he his doing to improve the code search experience of Val Town . It was a great read, and you might have seen it trending on Hacker News . As Val Town's most active user (behind Steve Krouse, one of the founders of Val Town), I for sure agree with Tom that search feature of Val Town needs improvements. But while reading his post, I immediately thought of a different approach to the problem. And a few hours later, Val Town Search was born. Do things that don't scale How does this new shiny search engine work? Well, it's quite simple. I wrote a Deno script that fetches all vals from the Val Town API. I pushed the data to a Github Repository I added a Github Action that runs the script every hour to refresh the data. I created a simple frontend on top of the Github Search API that allows you to search the data. It's hosted on Val Town (obviously). That was it. I didn't have to build a complex search engine, I just used the tools that were available to me. Is this a scalable solution for Val Town? Probably not. Am I abusing the Github API? Maybe. Does it work better than the current search feature of Val Town? Absolutely! I hope that the val.town engineers will come up with a search feature that will put my little project to shame. But for now, you won't find a better way to search for vals than Val Town Search .

    Check it out here: https://chess.maxmcd.com Plain, brutalist, no bloat chess. Every page is only html and css. Every chess move is made by clicking a link. Send a link to your friend and they'll send you one back to make your move. No silly animations or slick interactivity to trip up your gameplay. When Google indexes this site will we successfully compute all possible chess moves? Functionality is quite limited, and things might be broken. Please let me know if you find bugs! Inspired by this HN discussion about sites that have all possible game states of tic-tac-toe. I plan on extending this to support real gameplay. I think it could be a nice simple interface for long form games with friends. Might also be fun to add a static AI to play against. Feel free to PR any changes if you'd like to see something added.

    stevekrouse.com - my personal website This val hosts my personal website. The view data is stored in Val Town SQLite - @std/sqlite. It used to live on Github Pages, which is why I proxy over requests to certain blog posts over to the Github Pages site still. Todos [ ] Speed up page load by loading sqlite data later like in @healeycodes/steve_web [ ] Store more (legally storable) analytics data, and maybe make a sparkline! [ ] Add some sort of way to contact me [ ] Move over all my blog posts from Github Pages (maybe into @std/blob as a CMS?)

    TodoApp
    @stevekrouse
    SSR React Mini & SQLite Todo App This Todo App is server rendered and client-hydrated React. This architecture is a lightweight alternative to NextJS, RemixJS, or other React metaframeworks with no compile or build step. The data is saved server-side in Val Town SQLite . SSR React Mini Framework This "framework" is currently 44 lines of code, so it's obviously not a true replacement for NextJS or Remix. The trick is client-side importing the React component that you're server rendering . Val Town is uniquely suited for this trick because it both runs your code server-side and exposes vals as modules importable by the browser. The tricky part is making sure that server-only code doesn't run on the client and vice-versa. For example, because this val colocates the server-side loader and action with the React component we have to be careful to do all server-only imports (ie sqlite) dynamically inside the loader and action , so they only run server-side.
